Five Ways in Which Prospect Development Can Be an Agent of Change For Diversity, Equity & Inclusion in Philanthropy
Jun 29, 2021Over the summer, as social and racial justice movements accelerated and public awareness around inequality grew, many of my professional conversations turned to the topic of diversity in philanthropy. As a passionate advocate for diversity, equity, and inclusion in philanthropy, I was thrilled that this topic was getting so much attention. Visibility of these issues is essential to their resolution. And, as President of Apra, I was excited about the opportunity our profession has to directly impact these issues.
Although protests this summer may have elevated awareness, the problems resulting from the lack of diversity in the nonprofit space have been studied for years. Research has shown that the vast majority of nonprofit board members are white, that most foundation CEOs and presidents are white, and that only a small percentage of philanthropic grantmaking goes to communities of color. Further, although philanthropy is a shared practice and value across diverse communities, our organizations are often disproportionately focused on white donors. It’s important that we take action, not only because it’s the “right” thing to do, but because the lack of diversity in philanthropy has real and lasting consequences.
